Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington has opened up about the spiritual aspect of his Christian faith and highlighted the importance of having an “anchor” in an ever-changing culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Washington is gearing up for the release of his new film \u201cMacbeth,” and in an extensive New York Times feature titled \u201cDenzel Washington, Man on Fire,\u201d<\/a> the actor and his co-stars talked about his Christian faith.<\/p>\n Washington, who described himself as \u201ca God-fearing man,” shared about God, the Bible and Heaven in the interview. He revealed that it was a promise he made to his late mother that would encourage him to \u201chonor her and God.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat I do, what I make, what I made \u2014 all of that \u2014 is that going to help me on the last day of my life? It\u2019s about, Who have you lifted up? Who have we made better?\u201d he told the NYT.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is spiritual warfare. So, I\u2019m not looking at it from an earthly perspective. If you don\u2019t have a spiritual anchor you\u2019ll be easily blown by the wind and you\u2019ll be led to depression,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The Oscar-winning actor then lamented what he said is a self-obsessed society.<\/p>\n \u201cThe enemy is the inner me,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe Bible says in the last days \u2014 I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the last days, it\u2019s not my place to know \u2014 but it says we\u2019ll be lovers of ourselves. The number one photograph today is a selfie, \u2018Oh, me at the protest.\u2019 \u2018Me with the fire.\u2019 \u2018Follow me.\u2019 \u2018Listen to me.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re living in a time where people are willing to do anything to get followed. What is the long or short-term effect of too much information? It\u2019s going fast and it can be manipulated obviously in a myriad of ways. And people are led like sheep to slaughter,\u201d Washington said.<\/p>\n The entertainer then shared his view of Heaven, explaining that \u201cthere are going to be two lines, the long line and the short line, and I\u2019m interested in being in the short line.\u201d<\/p>\n The New York native encouraged the interviewee, Maureen Dowd, to read the Holy Bible. He suggested that she \u201cstart with the New Testament, because the Old Testament is harder.”<\/p>\n “You get caught up in the ‘who-begot-who-begot-who thing,'” he said.<\/p>\n Washington later revealed he \u201cfills up\u201d spiritually every morning before starting his day.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have to fill up that bucket every morning,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s rough out there. You leave the house in the morning. Here they come, chipping away. By the end of the day, you\u2019ve got to refill that bucket. We know right from wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
